I have been working with and educating youth for over thirty years in informal settings, teen centers and weekend retreats. It wasn't until fourteen years ago, when I took a few teens out on a mountain bike ride, that I saw how adventure activities force one to unplug and recharge. The shift from unhealthy behaviors was shockingly quick. Soon, parents started contacting me and expressed how mountain biking was positively changing their child.
The number of aspiring riders grew, but some couldn't afford bikes. I began to fundraise. Within a year, Geerz was created and became my full-time passion. Thirteen years later we have over 600 weekly riders in nearly twenty locations, with the help of amazing donors who give not only their financial support, but professional support and time.
There are kids and now, soldiers, out there waiting for the opportunity to join Geerz. They have the drive; they just need the equipment and funding.
