Geerz is an awesome organization I have had the privilege of being involved with from its very beginning. (I actually donated the very first bike to Geerz.) Geerz teaches Israeli youth empowerment - without medication, without critique, without humiliation. They demonstrate every day that learning to mountain bike boosts a child’s self-esteem with a healthy, constructive release and the realization that he or she has the power to create a path to confidence and achievement. Thanks to the help of so many friends and family members, I was fortunate enough to take part in the Get Into Geerz Two-Day Ride 2018. The experience was absolutely amazing. On the way back home I was in the car with Rabbi Nachum Wasosky, the head of the organization, and a handful of kids who had completed the program and were now ride helpers. Nachum turned to me and asked, “So what did you think?” I told him I was blown away by the whole trip and was amazed to see how much more I was capable of than I had originally thought. Several times during the ride I was worn out, tired, and just wanted to quit, hop into the jeep, and get a ride back to the hotel. However, thanks to the positive energy and atmosphere around me I was able to persevere and keep going. One of the kids in the back piped up, “Isn't that the exact point of what Geerz does?” Nachum simply smiled.
When I signed up for the ride, I was expecting a vacation in Israel that involved some mountain biking. In reality, I was getting a taste of the Geerz program. After just two days, I felt stronger, happier, and ready to take on whatever came my way. I can only begin to imagine the positive impact this program has on Israeli youth. It is for this reason I have decided to commit to the training and challenge of this ride again. I truly believe in this organization and what they do, and together we can help Nachum and Geerz reach out to and help so many more Israeli youth.
