On April 7-9, I will once again be participating in a two day mountain bike ride in the hills of northern Israel to raise money for a unique organization named Geerz. Geerz literally transforms the lives of hundreds of Israeli kids through a highly innovative and effective therapeutic mountain biking program. These kids suffer from a wide range of issues such as ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, eating disorders, anger management and autism and Geerz has created a customized curriculum to develop communication, self confidence, problem solving and team-work. These kids suffer from a wide range of issues such as ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, eating disorders, anger management and autism and Geerz has created a customized curriculum to develop communication, self confidence, problem solving and team-work. Geerz works even where conventional therapy has failed. In fact, over 75% of Geerz participants are referred by education and mental health professionals.
Over the last year and a half, Geerz has expanded its therapeutic mountain biking programs to Israel's periphery and development towns such as Sderot which is precisely where the kids need it the most but can afford it the least. The demand in these areas is enormous. However, since the families of these kids cannot afford to pay for the program, Geerz has to raise funds for virtually the entire cost of these programs, $1660 per child and $20,000 for a group of 12.
I have personally seen the amazing things that Geerz does for my 14 year old twin boys, Yehuda and Shmuel. Every week for the past five years, my boys anxiously wait for their weekly ride with their respective Geerz groups. The overall skills that they have developed; the growth in their confidence; and, their internal sense of self-accomplishment, are amazing feats. These are things which they would not have achieved without their participation in Geerz. Every extra dollar helps those children who can't who can't afford to participate in the Geerz programs, experience the Geerz magic!
